Strategy playbook

The full plan, in the open.

We sat down with the team and mapped the whole strategy: what the real problem is, who needs to be involved, what happens first, and how to make it scalable, sustainable and simple enough for anyone to act on.

Strategy branches

Status quo, brand core, voice and positioning.

Each branch of the strategy map, written out. This is the layer most organisations keep internal — we publish it so it can be challenged and improved.

Status Quo

Problem definition
Plastic and pollution entering the Nile faster than any actor removes it.
Political & social situation
Eleven basin countries, uneven infrastructure, competing water priorities.
Research & data
Published river-export studies plus our own monitoring, kept open.

Brand Core

Mission
Remove plastic and pollution from the Nile and stop it entering in the first place.
Vision
A living river basin where life flourishes as it did thousands of years ago.
Purpose
Protect the most precious resource we have: clean water.
Goals
Measurable recovery, prevention infrastructure, education reach, open data coverage.

Brand Voice

Values
Honest, evidence-led, inclusive, relentlessly practical.
Attributes
Direct, calm, confident — never guilt-driven.
Messaging
Show the problem, show the plan, show the next step anyone can take.

Brand Positioning

Market analysis
Many cleanup organisations, few with an open, data-first basin strategy.
Target audience
Policymakers, NGOs, educators, founders, local communities, funders.
Competitors
Allies, not rivals — we borrow every process that already works.
SWOT
Strength: system thinking. Weakness: scale. Opportunity: data gap. Threat: instability.

Action plan

What happens first, second, third.

  1. 01

    Phase 1 — Baseline

Stand up monitoring stations and the open map, publish the first basin dataset.

  2. 02

    Phase 2 — Local proof

Run repeatable cleanups on defined stretches with local crews and measured tonnage.

  3. 03

    Phase 3 — Prevention

Deploy collection and recycling routes with municipalities and businesses.

  4. 04

    Phase 4 — Education

Roll the school and community programme across basin countries.

  5. 05

    Phase 5 — Scale

Package the playbook so other rivers can copy it without starting from zero.

Experience

How people meet the foundation.

Activities

Nile Data, Nile Edu, Nile Act — measurement, education and on-the-ground action.

Projects

Book publishing, documentaries and collaborations that carry the story further.

Events

Discussion panels and cleaning activities that turn attention into participation.

Touchpoints

Online: web and socials. Offline: offices, cleaning sites and printed documents.

Fundraising

Donations, grants, partnerships and product revenue funding the operation.

Lookbook

Logo, typography, imagery, assets and collaterals kept consistent everywhere.

The PLAN

Four tracks, four sets of instructions.

This is the part people write us for. Every track states the role you play, the concrete moves in order, and the one thing to do first. Nothing here is theoretical — it is what we ask of partners already working with us.

Policymakers

You control the levers that make prevention permanent.

  1. 01Adopt the open monitoring standard: one station per 100 km of reach, quarterly pH, oxygen, turbidity and microplastic readings, published as open data.
  2. 02Mandate waste collection coverage within 5 km of the riverbank before any new riverside development permit.
  3. 03Put deposit-return or extended producer responsibility on beverage packaging — the single biggest item we pull out by count.
  4. 04Fund municipal collection routes and transfer points; cleanups without disposal capacity just move plastic around.
  5. 05Co-sign a basin-level data agreement so upstream and downstream ministries read the same numbers.

Start here: Ask us for the monitoring standard and the station siting map for your governorate.

NGOs

You already have the trust and the crews. We supply the system.

  1. 01Claim a stretch: name it, map it, and own the baseline measurement for it.
  2. 02Use the standard cleanup protocol — crews of eight, sorted and weighed waste, photos before and after, one water sample.
  3. 03Report tonnage and material split into the open dataset so basin-wide totals are real, not estimated.
  4. 04Coordinate calendars with us so we do not stack three cleanups on the same weekend in the same city.
  5. 05Escalate structural blockers (no disposal site, illegal dumping, industrial outflow) to the policy track instead of re-cleaning the same spot.

Start here: Request the cleanup protocol and the reporting template, then pick your stretch.

Educators

Prevention is a habit, and habits are formed in classrooms.

  1. 01Run the Nile Edu module: four lessons covering the river, the waste path, measurement, and personal action.
  2. 02Do one measured field activity per term — a schoolyard or riverbank audit with counted, categorised waste.
  3. 03Submit class results to the live map so students see their data next to national monitoring stations.
  4. 04Set up a school collection point and track its monthly volume as a maths and science exercise.
  5. 05Send us feedback on the material; every module is revised from teacher notes, not desk research.

Start here: Request the lesson pack in Arabic or English and the field-audit worksheet.

Founders & companies

You can remove the plastic before it ever reaches the water.

  1. 01Audit your packaging: what reaches the basin, in what volume, and what it would take to redesign it.
  2. 02Take responsibility for collection of your own material — sponsor routes, not just logos.
  3. 03Adopt a stretch commercially: fund equipment, local crews and one monitoring station for at least 12 months.
  4. 04Offer skills instead of cash where that is stronger — logistics, sensors, data engineering, recycling capacity.
  5. 05Publish your numbers with ours; a claim without a measurement is marketing, not impact.

Start here: Bring your packaging and distribution data and we will scope a partnership in one session.
